The GAC Environmental Awards are an opportunity for the Gulf Aluminium Council members to be recognized for leading practices and innovations in environmental management and to share their experiences within the industry and the community.

The Awards are established to recognize environmental excellence and leadership,and to acknowledge the outstanding contribution recipients have made balancing environmental responsibility with the successful development of the Gulf Aluminium Council. The awards are also an excellent vehicle for transferring knowledge on to others, thus helping to improve environmental performance across the industry.

The awards also seek to develop and maintain community confidence in the sustainability of Aluminium activities by highlighting the advances and innovations in environmental practices in the resources sector.

What do they recognize?

  • The efforts and initiatives, innovative practices, programs, projects and achieved results by the Gulf Aluminium Council members.
  • The projects that promote sustainable development.
  • Initiatives that can be replicated and are scalable for other member companies.

Why apply?

The GAC Environmental Awards are an independent and prestigious endorsement of the achievements by the applying organization. As part of the continual improvement in environmental excellence, the Awards assist to raise the standards across all aspects of the environment and provide ways to benchmark against top performers in our industry in the GCC.

Submitting an entry provides the applying organization with the opportunity to review its Environmental systems and identify its core strengths and achievements. The Awards can provide a variety of positive communications, opportunities for publicity, positive business profiling, competitive advantage and heightened credibility within our industry and the GCC.

Awards classes

There will be two different classes:

Class A: Aluminium smelter companies facilities
Class B: Downstream aluminium companies

Criteria

Showing the performance and relevant KPI’s of:

  • The improvement over the baseline
  • The improvement compared to the benchmark (local, regional or international)
  • The percentage of the achieved target

Qualifiers / Minimum Requirements

  • Initiatives to comply to regulations and legal permit requirements will not be considered for an award
  • Initiatives need to demonstrate sustainable performance for minimum period of six months
  • The initiatives shall be implemented in the two years of the award cycle.

The Awards Process

  • The awards will be held every two (2) years and evaluated by a selected assessment panel (evaluators) led by the GAC Secretary General. The assessment panel will consist of a minimum of four members (inclusive of the GAC Secretary General) and will be selected by the GAC Secretary General and the Chairman of the GAC EHS Committee. The evaluators shall be independent from the participating companies.
  • The assessment panel (evaluators) will review all the submitted projects and ensure they are aligned with the Awards criteria and terms.
  • Each member of the assessment panel shall rate the initiatives based on the following factors:
  • Environmental improvement over baseline 55 points
  • Project Identification/Relevance to award objectives 10 points
  • Sustainability benefits 10 points
  • Efficiency and effectiveness of deployment 10 points
  • Replicable/reproducible to other members 10 points
  • Quality of the document / presentation 5 points
  • The panel’s average rating will determine the best initiative per class (Class A and B) for the Awards Ceremony by the selection committee

How to apply?

  • Companies shall submit completed applications to the GAC Secretary General’s office by the stipulated date below. The Environment application template is to be used (max 1500 words) and a power point presentation (max 20 slides) electronically and followed by a signed a hard copy submission (authorized signatory of the company, eg. CEO) with supporting documents
  • A company can submit maximum two applications.

Guidelines for the criteria

  • Describe the operation or project activities occurring on site (The project should be implemented for at least six months)
  • Outline the scope of the environmental issue addressed. This may include whether the environmental challenge required the development of new technology or techniques, or the refinement of existing ones, and how better environmental practices were promoted to achieve specific goals.
  • Highlight the commitment to environmental excellence, which may include risk assessment, financial commitment, management systems, environmental reporting, or training programs.
  • Describe the results and impacts of the initiative or innovation, and provide tangible evidence that the results demonstrate an environmentally excellent outcome (base line condition before implementation of the project and the improvement, world benchmark used to compare and the comparison to the project, percentage of the targets, etc.).
  • Outline any ongoing partnerships and how these will be maintained. This may include efforts to share the knowledge gained from the project with the community, government or industry peers
  • Entrants must demonstrate how innovation and leadership have resulted in sustainable environmental performance
  • Entrants could attach material to support their entry such as pictures, plans, diagrams, or third-party testimonials (independent companies, organizations, government, ministry or any external audits) to support and demonstrate the project's success and continuity.
